Who knew jerky could be so good? Gary West Smoked Meats, a family business located in Oregon's Rogue Valley, specializes in, if you will, artisanal jerky. Hand-cut from the top round, the strips are seasoned with all-natural marinades and smoked over real hickory. The three jerkies we sampled - traditional and Cajun beef, and buffalo - were delicious and chewy, yet had an almost silky tenderness. Jerky, in all its permutations and gift baskets, runs about $20 a pound. Gary West also sells smoked turkey, ham and salmon, as well as Oregon-made candy and jams.
